Flowtown recently released a great infographic (see below) depicting how some of the largest companies are using social media. It is no surprise that the vast majority of these companies are on social media platforms (like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube), but what is also interesting is HOW these companies are using Social Media. While it certainly varies from company to company, it is evident that most of these companies are using Social Media only as another push-mechanism. While social media as a push-medium can be useful, its effectiveness is still up for debate. We find that companies who use social media for the following see the highest ROI, as long as it is done in-line with an effective digital strategy:

  • Segmenting and targeting customers and leads
  • Engagement (for the purpose of lead nurturing)
  • Customer service and feedback (including real-time monitoring and presence management)
  • Empowerment and evangelism – turning customers in brand / product advocates
  • Listening and understanding consumers and the marketplace
